HUNDREDS attended a job fair held in Redditch’s Army Reserves Centre on Wednesday (October 18).

The event at Kohima House was held from 10am until around 3.30pm and saw companies from Redditch, Bromsgrove and Birmingham turn out to talk about career opportunists.

There were more than 30 booths at the fair – making it even bigger than last year’s event when only around 22 companies made an appearance.

Many different groups turned up, including the NHS and Diamond buses as well as Redditch United Football Club and McDonalds.

Redditch’s 37 Signal Regiment helped by providing the location and shuttle buses ran back and forth between the fair and job centres.

Inside the centre employers spoke to anyone interested in their company, while outside the army had trailers with information about careers with them, alongside a climbing wall and quadbike.

Gwyn Sherriff, who works for the Department for Work and Pensions, said: “We hope that the fair will attract around 600 people, providing a great opportunity to those looking for new employment or a career change.”

Coun Bill Hartnett (Lab, Church Hill), who also visited the event, added: “It was a really great day – very busy with lots of different exhibitors. A great opportunity for Redditch people to learn more about jobs and careers.”

The Job Centre has run lots of job fairs in the past and is working with local organisations and libraries to help people find work.

Official employment figures, released by the Office for National Statistics this week show that unemployment is at 4.3 per cent – the lowest since 1975. It also showed that the employment level in the West Midlands has risen by 58,000 since June.
