Carnival success but it could be the last

CROWDS lined the streets to cheer on this year’s Astwood Bank Carnival procession for what could be the last time.

Businesses and community groups toured through the village on floats donated by Allelys Heavy Haulage last Saturday (July 12) which this year had a them of The Commonwealth.

The procession was headed up by Carnival Royalty in a horse and carriage followed by Mayor Pat Witherspoon and MP Karen Lumley in limousines donated by Thomas Brothers.

Marching bands and walking groups also took to the roads while people watching placed coins in buckets and fishing nets held out by those taking part.

This year’s carnival float winner was Astwood Bank Toddler Group , and the winner of the overall best in show went to Astwood Bank First School.

Best dressed property went to number 11 on High Street, and Knights Pharmacy scooped the business category title.

Stalls, games, and displays by West Mercia Police Band were on offer in the arena, while members of Crossfit Trainers held a tug o war competition and bands carried the event on into the evening.

More than £800 was raised at a Race Night the evening before the procession.

But despite the success of the event, organisers are warning if more volunteers do not come forward to help with preparations this year’s carnival could be the last.

Jenny Lightfoot, chairman of the carnival committee, said: “If you think you can help at next year’s carnival, or at other events throughout the year the carnival committee would be delighted to hear from you.

“There are a whole host of jobs that need doing with varying amounts of time needed for them.”
