Challenge met: Redditch stroke survivor travels Cornwall solo

REDDITCH stroke survivor Steve Fitter has successfully completed his challenge of travelling across Cornwall alone – thanks to support from the Stroke Association.

Steve had a devastating stroke in June 2013, and was told he would never walk again.

An IT project manager, Steve, now 58, had been a keen runner, swimmer and cyclist and the stroke had a massive impact on his life.

It initially left him with no movement on his right side and although he has now made a good recovery he struggles with aphasia, which affects his ability to talk.

Back in May Steve set off on a solo 12 week tour of Cornwall to help him regain his sense of freedom.

On his journey he camped, ran parkruns across the county and joined local cycling groups on day tours.

And as it was a holiday too, he visited lots of local landmarks including Tintagle Castle, Padstow, St Ives and Kuggar and Lizard Point Heritage Centre.

Talking about his trip, Steve said: “It gave me my freedom and made me feel happy!”

Christy Weatherby, Life After Stroke Centre co-ordinator at the Stroke Association in Bromsgrove, helped Steve prepare for the journey.

She said: “After a stroke, around one in three people like Steve have difficulty communicating, which can be both terrifying and isolating.

“We’re so proud of Steve taking on this daunting challenge. It’s clear to see his communication has improved and his confidence.

“This trip has marked a huge milestone in his recovery and he is now planning a five month tour around Scotland in a camper van on his own next year.”

Steve added: “Camping was a great experience, but the next trip will be more comfortable.”
