Change of plan for road in Redditch sparks opposition

Ross Crawford 3rd Dec, 2016   0

ANGRY residents have started a petition in a bid to reverse a county council decision to change the priority on their road.

Householders on Nine Days Lane have already won the backing of local MP Karen Lumley and this week the support of Rod Lake, a West Mercia traffic management advisor, said the chairman of Wire Residents Association, Bob Price.

“The petition is going really well and we anticipate we’ll have between 200 and 250 names within a couple of days,” said Mr Price.

At the moment residents living off Nine Days Lane, which runs up towards Rough Hill Woods, have right of way at the foot of the hill.

However plans to build a new development of 131 houses plus offices on land at the back of the Alexandra Hospital, which were recently approved by Redditch borough council, would, at the insistence of the county council, see a junction installed giving priority to traffic coming from the new development, forcing vehicles coming down the steep hill to give way.

This say residents would be highly dangerous and could see drivers unable to stop in bad weather and winter.

Mrs Lumley said: “I can see exactly what the residents are talking about here and would have the same concerns if I lived there.

“I am told Worcestershire County Council were presented with outdated accident report data at the meeting and that in fact there have been accidents on that section of the road more recently than the data provided indicated.

“Due to the seriousness of the matter I met with Worcestershire County Councillor and Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways, Marcus Hart to discuss the issue. He has agreed to meet me on site, with residents, to discuss their concerns.”
