AN ex-serviceman from Redditch is taking on a boxing challenge in aid of charity – with the backing of the borough mayor.

Shaun Byng, who served with the 4th Regiment Army Air Corps, has signed up to Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) which gives people with no boxing background the chance to experience the world of boxing in a safe environment, while also raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Shaun decided to take on the challenge after his friend’s sister died of cancer and he hopes to raise as much money as possible.

He said: “I feel it’s really important to raise awareness and funds to help fight this disease which does not discriminate.

“The training is really hard, but I hope to put on a good show for everyone.”

Shaun has faced an eight-week training course at Riggs Gym in Moseley, Birmingham, and will be fighting in a bout at Edgbaston cricket ground on Saturday, November 26 to showcase his newly-learnt skills and fitness.

Borough Mayor Councillor Joe Baker said: “In my line of work as Mayor I get to meet lots of interesting and hard working residents in Redditch and I am proud that our ex-servicemen and woman are finding the find time to work hard in our community.

“I think it’s so important to raise awareness of this awful disease. I know when my own mother had breast cancer, the treatment she needed saved her life and this was all thanks to the life-saving work done by charities like Cancer Research.”

UWCB are Cancer Research’s biggest fundraisers in the UK and raised more than £2million 2015.
