Charity collection in Redditch is big boost for homeless

A REDDITCH company which got behind an employee’s idea to help the homeless this Christmas has collected £600 and 16 boxes of food for the cause.

Staff at Buildbase, based in Beoley, decided to set up a foodbank collection after their colleague Steve Fry felt moved to help the homeless in Redditch after meeting an old friend – quite by chance – who had ended up living on the streets.

He said: “It really hit a nerve with me. She was a beautiful, bright young girl when I knew her, and to think her life has gone in such a different direction breaks my heart.

“People often think that Christmas is a happy time – and for those with a family and a bit of cash, it is – but if you haven’t got any money or a place to stay, it must be unbelievably tough. We hope we can make a difference with our donations.”

Between the staff and customers at Buildbase, 16 boxes of essential food items and festive treats were handed over to the foodbank warehouse in Beoley and £600 in cash was raised for Redditch Nightstop too.

The money was handed over to Rebekah Bott of Redditch Nightstop this week and it is hoped to ease the strain on the charity during busy times of the year.

Vicki Clohessy, sales consultant at Buildbase, said: “It was a fantastic effort from all the staff, customers and members of the public and we are extremely grateful and thankful to those who donated after seeing the article in the Redditch Standard.

“It’s going to make a real difference to people in the community who are struggling.”
