A REDDITCH charity has said cheers to Wolf Brewery of Norfolk after it received more than £2,000 from the sale of over 45,000 pints of ‘Edith Cavell Ale’.

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust, based in Grosvenor House, Redditch, gives welfare support to nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants experiencing financial or personal hardship, often because of illness, domestic abuse, disability, working poverty and older age.

It was set up in memory of the heroic WW1 nurse, who grew up in Norfolk.

Edith Cavell worked as a British nurse during the First World War, saving the lives of over 200 Allied soldiers by helping them escape from German-occupied Belgium. For this act she was executed by a firing squad in 1915 and a Fund for Nurses was set up in her honour.

With 5p from the sale of each of the 45,000 pints and bottles of Edith Cavell Ale sold during 2015, the Trust has received a total of £2,267 to help support nurses in crisis.

On accepting the donation from the Wolf Brewery, Steve Moralee, of the Cavell Nurses’ Trust said: “We are extremely grateful to Wolf Brewery for their donation and continuing support. Raising a glass of Edith Cavell Ale is a fantastic way to celebrate the life of this heroic nurse and support nurses who are facing hardship today.”
