STUDENTS at Woodfield Middle School last week battled it out for the coveted title of ‘Year 5 Chef of the Year 2019’.
The final saw eight youngsters put their cooking skills to the test with help from older students from years 7 and 8 who had previously taken part in the competition.
This year’s brief was to design and make a meal and dessert suitable for sale in the school canteen.
On the day of the final they each made their chosen lunch meal and dessert and then laid the table, presenting their meals with homemade menus for the judges to enjoy.
Various members of staff took part in the judging including canteen manager, Michelle Thomas and Claire Oliver who is in charge of desserts, plus teachers Gemma Lawrence and Alison Chapman with guests including trustees and the head chef and commis chef from The Orangery in Redditch.
However there could only be one winner and that was Cieran McCluskey who made a chicken goujon wrap which included basil, spinach and cherry tomatoes served with homemade wedges
Violet was second with her chicken and vegetable stir fry served with egg fried rice.
For pudding she served lemon cupcakes topped with piped yellow frosting, lemon fudge pieces and edible rice paper butterflies.
Kimberley took third place for the main meal which was ‘toad in the hole’ served with mash and gravy. Sophie was third for the dessert which was strawberry shortbread stacks and her total score put her in third overall.
All participants were awarded an outstanding star and certificate for their efforts as well as a personalised wooden spoon/spatula to use for future cooking Students who achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd place also received a cooking themed prize which was donated by Lakeland at Webbs garden centre.
The winning dishes (first and second place) will also be served for one day in the school canteen.
