A TRANQUIL place where people can escape the noise and hubbub of shopping – that’s one vision of St Stephen’s Church from vicar Paul Lawlor.
The church is the main landmark in Redditch yet many people pass it by unaware of the shop, cafe and numerous events and concerts that are held inside.
“I see it as a place of gathering for those on the edge of Christian faith, those who use it for marriages and baptisms and those who use it as a place of worship all the time.” said the Revd Lawlor.
The aim is to get more people involved in this fine Victorian structure with its fine stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings and ornate organ.
“It’s all about space.” said the Revd Lawlor. “Some shopping centres have prayer rooms, a place where people can get away from the hubbub and for Redditch, the church with its green is a real blessing, a place a tranquility right in the centre of town.”
Plans in the pipeline include developing the cafe area and using some of the space to mount a permanent exhibition on St Stephens and the development and history of Redditch as well as making greater use of the cultural opportunities.
“The aim is to make everything more open an inviting, bringing the community together, while retaining its cool tranquility.” said Revd Lawlor.
