Clean sweep - Redditch firefighters step up for chimney fire safety week

Ross Crawford 28th Aug, 2017   0

REDDITCH firefighters are leaping into action as part of National Chimney Fire Safety Week.

Running from September 4-11 the aim is to make people aware of the dangers of chimney fires and the importance of getting chimneys regularly swept.

And Red Watch from the Birmingham Road based service will be in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre on Monday and Tuesday, September 4-5 from 11am to 3pm to pass on helpful information and advice to shoppers.

They say chimneys should be swept according to the type of fuel being used:

Smokeless fuels – at least once a year.

Bituminous coal – at least twice a year

Wood – quarterly when in use

Oil – once a year

Gas – once a year, but refer to the gas safe register.

Watch Commander Jon Laight Red Watch said: “Chimney Fire Safety week is nice and early this year so we can speak to the community in advance of the cold weather.

“This will allow plenty of time for them to prepare and find out all the best tips and advice on how to prevent chimney fires, keep their properties safe and what to do in the event of a chimney fire.

“For further information they can go online to www.chimneyfiresafetyweek.co.uk/tips-and-advice/ as well as coming to speak to us on September 4-5 in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.”
