THE GREAT and the good of Alcester were honoured recently at the annual mayor’s awards.

The evening, held at the Greig Hall on February 5, celebrated the best of the town as nominated by the public and chosen by Councillor David Henderson.

Hosted by Alcester Town Council, seven categories spanned individuals, businesses, and community organisations, including a lifetime achievement award and a citizen of the year award.

Two new award categories were Volunteer of the Year and Initiative of the Year.

The mayor of Alcester, Councillor Henderson, said: “What a night. Now known as the Alcester Oscars, and truly worthy of that accolade.

“It was a night when we celebrated the contributions of many businesses, organisations and individuals from within our community who make Alcester such a special place to live.

“Everyone was a worthy winner, regardless of whether they went home with an award.”

In front of an invited audience, the following worthy recipients received accolades.

Business Organisation of the Year went to jewellers Camilla Jones.

The company, which is both a retailer and jewellery maker, exemplifies how a high street business can be a positive force, known as much for community engagement and charitable support as for exceptional craftsmanship.

She said: “We were delighted to win this award, it’s a huge honour.

“Alcester is a unique town, and every business here is more than just a business. Each one is part of and contributes to the community. We love being part of it.”

Community Organisation of the Year was awarded to Alcester Town Walking Football Club, which offers social sessions plus competitive tournaments for men aged 50+ and women more than 40 years old.

Now with more than 104 members, the club has become a hub of  friendship, fitness, and positivity, combating isolation and loneliness while strengthening community cohesion and making a lasting impact on individual lives.

Initiative of the Year to the River Arrow and Alne Revival (RAAR), a community interest company established last November.

Led by Eleanor Cooke and assisted by volunteers, RAAR is tackling river restoration in Alcester, starting with an stretch near Gunnings Bridge on the River Arrow.

RAAR directors Eleanor Cooke and Lauren Matheson, with Councillor Henderson.

Its work includes improving riverbank stability, green engineering measures to stabilise bare earth and slow water flow, and supporting biodiversity by enhancing water quality and habitat structure.

Eleanor told the Standard: “We’re delighted that River Arrow & Alne Revival has received this award.

“It reflects the growing care for our local rivers and the wildlife, landscapes and communities connected to them. It’s a real vote of confidence in what we’re building together.”

Volunteer of the Year 2025 was awarded to Phil Hodges, who, for more than 16 years, has volunteered his time, energy, and skills to support young people in the town’s youth club.

His citation stated: “What truly sets Phil apart is his longevity and consistency. Few individuals give so many years of service with such enthusiasm and integrity. His contribution has not only strengthened the club but has also inspired other volunteers to give their best, making him a truly deserving candidate for this recognition.”

Young Person of the Year was jointly presented to Harriet Busby, Luke Poole and Dylan Davis.

Luke Poole and Dylan Davis have both demonstrated exceptional community spirit through their volunteer work with Park Kids, a free, community-led activity for children of all ages.

They have volunteered for the group for a number of years, showing remarkable reliability by turning up regardless of the weather. Their consistent dedication to supporting younger children in our community, week after week, rain or shine, exemplifies the very best of civic responsibility and community spirit in the town’s young people.

Harriet was acknowledged for volunteering at the Alcester Community Fridge.

She assists with all tasks in operating the resource, whilst making all users feel welcome and comfortable.

Her citation stated: ‘Harriet’s commitment to supporting her community, helping to reduce food waste while ensuring vulnerable residents have access to quality food, shows maturity, compassion, and dedication beyond her years.

‘Her invaluable help demonstrates real civic responsibility that is truly remarkable for someone so young.’

Citizen of the Year was awarded to Ali Buchanan for her tireless support of numerous projects. Her citation read: ‘Ali Buchanan’s exceptional, long-term commitment to Alcester has touched countless lives across the community.

‘Ali’s empathy, initiative, and unwavering service have delivered lasting benefits to those facing financial hardship, social isolation, and limited support networks, making her highly deserving of this award.’

Ali’s work with the Crafty Lunch Club created inclusive spaces for adults with disabilities.

After chance conversation revealed local children had never seen the seaside, she secured town council support for a three-year project enabling up to 20 families annually to visit the beach.

Her projects span kids’ school holiday lunch clubs, Christmas dinners for older residents, early support for the Neurodivergent Friendly Town initiative, cook and eat sessions and the Community Fridge.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to former town and district councillor Sue Adams.

Sue held the office of Alcester mayor three times and went on to represent Alcester at Stratford District Council, which she chaired in 2016.
