Community rallies together to save Woodrow First School’s swimming pool

THE community is rallying round to support Woodrow First School’s fund-raising drive to save its swimming pool.

So far more than £1,100 has been donated towards the target of £10,000 and headteacher Richard Kieran said his hope would be for a large corporate firm to come in and help them get over the finishing line.

“We’ve had quite a few firms come in and offering some really good support on a consultancy basis and the local community as ever have been fabulous but we’re now looking for some corporate folk to come in to keep the momentum going,” he said.

A keen cyclist, Richard is organising his own sponsored event, riding 100km, while other members of staff run 10km or swim 10km.

“The parents are doing a sponsored Easter cake bake, wonderful South Redditch Sport and Social Club have organised a quiz night to raise funds for us on March 27, and Greggs, who already give us lots of support, will give us 60 doughnuts to be used in a creative, fundraising way.”

The pool has helped nearly 3,000 children at Woodrow First and Nursery learn to swim over the last 50 years.

It has also been enjoyed by other schools including the local special school and by community groups such as Brownies and Babyswim.

The money will be used to buy a new liner and get the ball rolling for the installation of a new boiler in the future.

“There was a time when schools used to get funding for things like swimming but those days have gone and we have had to use our own budget, but that can’t continue,” said Richard.

“We’ve done the best we can to keep it going to make sure children now and in the future can get a swimming entitlement.

“It’s a fantastic asset for the school and we don’t want to lose it.”
