CONSULTATION - Have your say on the future of Redditch's e-scooters

Redditch Editorial 17th Jun, 2023   0

REDDITCH residents are being given the opportunity to discuss the future of the ongoing Bird e-scooter trial, writes Poppy Chambers.

The public consultation event will take place at 6pm on Wednesday, June 28, in the Redditch Town Hall council chamber.

Council officers and representatives from Bird will be in attendance to answers queries, receive feedback and present current plans for the electric transport.

The scheme is set to run until March 31, 2024. In the months following that date, the Department for Transport (DfT) is expected to announce a permanent decision regarding e-scooters.

The government sanctioned e-scooters have been in circulation since October 2020, and are intended to replace the use of petrol vehicles when travelling for errands, visiting friends or exploring the community.

Representatives for Bird have commented on their pride in providing a safe and clean mode of transport to the people living in Redditch and how it can be easily activated through a free mobile app.

It has been calculated that Bird e-scooters have been ridden 120, 213 times within the past three years of service.

This number is being used to prove the important impact they are having on reducing damaging transportation habits.

Redditch Borough Council leader, Coun Matt Dormer, said: “Redditch is committed to innovating and embracing new modes of transport and our partnership with bird bringing e-scooters to residents has been a success over the past three years.”

He added the authority hoped to welcome all residents and interested parties to attend the public meeting so they could ask any necessary questions and remain informed on the rest of the trial.
