Cooking up a very special Christmas invitation in Alcester

A ‘BEAUTIFUL’ initiative aiming to ensure no one is alone this Christmas is being rolled out in Alcester this year.

Alcester couple Marcus and Joyce Emerson are the driving force behind the very first Alcester Community Christmas Day Dinner – a scheme where those alone on Christmas Day are invited to share a traditional dinner together at the Jubilee Centre.

The pair were inspired by a similar event in Shipston-on-Stour last year and, combined with their own three children growing up, decided to come up with a similar event for Alcester.

“We have both had times at Christmas where we have been away from family and loved ones, and would often remember how that felt when we were enjoying a family Christmas together,” said Joyce.

“So we decided to do something about it.

“It’s not just older people who can find themselves alone at Christmas – students, shift workers who can’t commute, people with families who live abroad – anyone can be affected, and we want those who find themselves without people to share Christmas Day with to join us.”

The event is not just a Christmas dinner either.

As well as a three-course traditional Christmas Dinner there will be entertainment in a lively, festive atmosphere with a ‘family Christmas’ feel complete with sherry and mince pies, games, the Queen’s speech and maybe even an afternoon film.

It is hoped the event will help bring people together in the long term too, breaking barriers for isolated people and encouraging new friendships.

“Christmas is a communal event and we hope by bringing people together for the day, they might make lasting friendships, or feel inspired to join one of the many social clubs Alcester has to offer. It could make a huge difference the whole year round,” added Joyce.

A core team of 10 volunteers is organising the event with 25 volunteers to help on the big day itself.

Much of the food has already been sourced, but anyone who wants to add their support is invited to vote for it in the green token scheme at Waitrose in Alcester.
