Core activity will help community in Redditch

HEADLESS Cross green is set for an ‘a-peeling’ event at its Apple Day next Saturday, October 7.

The community orchard will be celebrating the humble fruit with their annual free family event, featuring an abundance of apple-related activities at its core.

Featuring a host of stalls, entertainment and food, the event runs from 11am to 3pm and will be opened by Redditch’s contender for the Mrs Earth pageant, Joedine Scott from Oakenshaw, with local poet Spoz as master of ceremonies.

Visitors can have a go at juicing this year’s crop, while gardeners with a glut can press their own apples and pears or swap surplus produce at the Harvest Share stall.

Craft and community stalls will feature alongside regular favourites like the Human Fruit Machine while new this year will be the ‘Apple-Olympics’.

Resident artist Liz Jennings will have her latest orchard painting unveiled, likewise visitors can try their hand at creating their own orchard art.

Home-made cider fans are encouraged to bring a bottle of their own produce to enter into the cider contest while the bar will stock a selection of local apple nectars.

Bring a picnic or try the rare-breed barbecue and soups, and tasty delights from the Middle East.

Volunteer Alistair Waugh, said: “Orchards are a great way for the community to come together. So why not join us? Try your hand on a pole lathe, get your face painted. There’s a feast of things to do.”
