Council apologise after Redditch Crematorium damage

REDDITCH Borough council has apologised after a trailer damaged a gravestone and upturned soil at Redditch Crematorium.

Residents were outraged after seeing the damage, calling the council “irresponsible’ for driving over graves.

The damage has now been fixed and the council are reviewing operation procedures to insure this doesn’t happen again.

Redditch Borough Council leader, Coun Matt Dormer said: “It has been brought to my attention that recently a head stone has been broken and surface damage has occurred at The Abbey Cemetery.

“I, as many Redditch residents, have loved ones that are laid to rest in this place, and understand how the photographs circulating online may cause upset and be disturbing.

“I’d like to reassure residents that Redditch Borough Council will undertake a review of operational procedures, and consideration will be given to any changes as to how we operate to firmly reduce the risk of any similar events happening in the future.

“Please be assured that every effort to locate the family of the damaged headstone will be made on priority, and a replacement provided.”
