THE annual Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular run by Redditch Borough Council to mark Bonfire Night has been cancelled this year to comply with the Government’s safety measures around coronavirus.
The event, at Arrow Valley Park, attracts thousands of visitors each year and the scale of it means officers start planning and preparation months in advance.
Instead the events team will be looking at alternative gatherings and entertainment which meet social distancing rules, for everyone to enjoy.
The authority’s leisure portfolio holder Councillor Mike Rouse, said: “We have to put safety first and although come November guidance might be different we just don’t know and we can’t afford to take risks with people’s health.
“My family and I enjoy this event and whilst I know this will be disappointing news I also know our hard working officers are looking at excellent alternatives to be announced in due course.”
Council Leader Matt Dormer added: “This was a difficult decision for us to make as the bonfire and fireworks is such a popular event in the borough but I am sure our residents will understand.”
