MORE than 3,500 visitors went along to an Open Farm Sunday event held at The Stables Farm Shop and Cafe in Astwood Bank.

The event, on June 7, featured a host of activities to delight the crowds, including the chance to meet a variety of animals from creepy crawlies, guinea pigs and rabbits to sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys and an alpaca.

There were traditional games, including outdoor tenpin bowling and splat the rat, along with arts and crafts, tractor rides, a farm trail and sheep-shearing demonstrations.

There were also plenty of refreshments on offer, including a Pimms stall and a barbecue selling fresh organic free-range beef and lamb burgers and home-reared sausages.

By the end of the day, more than 800 burgers had been sold, along with 200kilos of home-made sausage in buns.

Lewis Babakhan, The Stable’s butchering manager, said the event had been a roaring success.

“Last year, we had sold out on the barbecue by midday and this year there is double the amount of people so we have a lot more meat,” he added.
