A POPULAR Redditch butcher was moved to tears when he was officially crowned the very best in the country.
Pete the Meat, based in Astwood Bank, has been named the top butcher in the UK in the Countryside Alliance Awards, a contest known as the ‘Rural Oscars’ which celebrates businesses and groups working hard to keep rural life thriving.
The team, based on Evesham Road, came joint top in the regional category but had no idea they would win nationally until the ceremony on Wednesday (March 21)
Business owner Pete Lawton said: “We had no idea whatsoever that we were going to win this. I was in tears on the stage when I went up to get the award. it was truly amazing.
“When I called to tell the team how we’d done – and what we had achieved, none of them believed me – not even when I put my wife on the phone to confirm it. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
The Astwood Bank butcher has been a familiar fixture in Redditch for many years and the judges commended excellent customer service and charitable work at the high street favourite.
The competition, which is based on customer recommendations, received more than 7,500 nominations and the top butcher, who has been in the business for 40 years, added: “I am so proud of the team. This is something I will remember for the rest of my life.
“We’d like to thank all of our loyal customers for nominating us – we are over the moon.”
