Danger drivers 'need refresher sessions'

AN AMERICAN-born resident has called for Redditch motorists to take compulsory refresher courses after falling victim to tailgaters.

John Kenney, originally from New York, says drivers should have mandatory lessons every time the Highway Code is updated.

The Headless Cross resident, who has lived in Redditch since 1993, said despite having stickers on his car which tell drivers to keep their distance, people constantly drive too close.

“One guy was right on my tail by Morton Stanley Park; he could have easily smashed into the back of me and he had two young girls in the back.

“I don’t want to offend the drivers here or the English, and I’m not saying on the other side of the pond we drive any better, but it just seems like so many have this cavalier attitude to driving.

“I think people pass their test and never look at the rules again and it is putting lives at risk. It is so dangerous.”

He added in certain US states every time someone renews their right to drive they have to take a refresher session while the police always hand out tickets for tailgaiting.

“So many people are complaining about it but not enough are doing anything about it.” added the 63 year-old.

“The system needs to get a refresher programme in place. I mean it could increase jobs, boost the economy, reduce accidents and the costs of insurance.”

A West Mercia Police spokeswoman said tackling dangerous driving was a priority for the force.

“We would always advise drivers to show consideration to other road users around them.” she said.

“This means, amongst other things, leaving plenty of space between themselves and any vehicles or cyclists.”

She urged people to report any incidents of dangerous driving by calling 101.
