David’s gesture tp help people in Redditch is a real cut above

A REDDITCH barber is taking time to brighten up the Christmas period for those living on the poverty line this year – and he’s starting at the top.

David Appleton, who lives in Headless Cross, decided to give something back to the community that has in the past helped him when he has faced hard times – by giving free hair cuts to those in need.

“A lot of people who might be struggling with money will often cut out luxuries – like getting their hair cut properly – because they just can’t afford it,” he said.

“So I thought, why not spend a little time helping those people feel more confident and smart in the run up to Christmas?

“Something simple, like having a smart cut can make a real difference to how you feel about yourself.”

So David, who works at Haircraft in Redditch, decided to use his day off to visit the Oasis Christian Centre and offer his services to those in need.

The drop-in cafe invites people from all walks of life to come together and enjoy a hot drink and nutritious meal once a week.

David, who set up his chair and managed to see six or seven people in the one-hour-drop-in, added: “These people are just good, ordinary people who have fallen on hard times – and it could happen to anyone.

“It’s only a small thing, but if having a new haircut can help someone get a job interview, or feel more confident, then I know I’ve done a little bit of good and given something back.”

David hopes to visit the centre again to give more free haircuts to those who want them.
