Dementia sufferers in Redditch invited to roll back the years with stories

Redditch Editorial 24th Apr, 2017   0

LOCAL performer and storyteller Gavin Young is to take inspiring life stories from dementia patients to Redditch as part of a countywide roadshow to help others with the illness.

Earlier in the year, adults living with dementia and their carers relived memories from the 40s, 50s and 60s using the art of storytelling and reminiscence as well as holding, touching, smelling and feeling objects from Museums Worcestershire collections to inspire them to think about the past.

The project, called Suitcase Stories, gathered tales from those sessions which were taken by storyteller Gavin Young to create a live performance of storytelling and music which will be performed at dementia cafés across the county.

It’s coming to Redditch next Wednesday (May 3) from 11.45am at the Masonic Hall, Easemore Rd, B98 8ER. There is no charge for entry and anyone is welcome to register to attend.

Huw Moseley, arts and events officer, said: “The cafés will help transport dementia sufferers back in time, providing them with an enjoyable afternoon and we are proud to be supporting the project. If you know of anyone who might benefit from attending the café, please get in touch.”

Jenny Davis, Suitcase Stories project manager, said: “It’s been extraordinary to see the participants of the project throw themselves so fully in to it, sharing their memories and stories. These memories are to be cherished and I’m so glad that they are being preserved through the stories Gavin Young is creating. I’m excited to see the finished product at the dementia cafes and how the live music will change and enhance those stories.”

For more information and to book on to the workshops or performances contact Jenny Davis, Suitcase Stories Project manager, 07946 585978 [email protected] or go to www.artsuplift.co.uk.

The project has been supported by Arts Council England, The Elmley Foundation, Worcestershire County Council, Worcestershire Arts Partnership, Malvern Hills District Council, Wychavon District Council, Worcester City Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Bromsgrove District Council and Redditch Borough Council.
