THE performance of Redditch & Bromsgrove doctors’ clinical commissioning group (CCG) has been rated as ‘Inadequate’ in NHS England’s annual review.

Inspectors listed a number of concerns however the key one was doubts over whether the doctors can hit their financial plan.

The CCG is currently aiming to hit a deficit target of £5.5million for the financial year 2017/18 leaving it with a total deficit of £9.2million.

To achieve this the organisation needs to more than £13million in savings.

Earlier this month local doctors agreed to restrict prescriptions for a range of medicines, treatments, including treatments and medicines for short-term, minor conditions, gluten-free foods, soya milks, formula for lactose intolerance and oral nutrition supplements.

NHS England’s annual review also raised concerns over the CCG’s performance when assessing dementia care, learning difficulties, mental health care and maternity cases and its poor participation in diabetetes assessments.

Jo-Anne Alner, locality director for NHS England, said: “All ratings are based on CCGs’ leadership, financial management, performance in key NHS standards and ultimately how they are contributing towards improving the health and wellbeing of patients and the public.”

A spokesperson for Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG said: “We are obviously disappointed with our rating but it does reflect where the CCG was financially last year.

“We continue to work hard to address the financial challenges and are confident this progress will be reflected in future ratings.”
