THE county’s largest social landlord is backing an international campaign to end domestic violence.
Fortis Living – which provides more than 15,000 homes throughout Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire – is supporting The 16 Days of Action, from November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – until December 10, Human Rights Day.
Statistics on domestic abuse in the UK make for sobering reading :
One in four women will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lives.
Two women a week are killed by their partner or former partner.
One in four LGBT relationships is abusive.
The average victim will suffer more than 50 incidents before reporting.
The number one barrier preventing women from leaving abusive situations is housing.
Martin Lakeman of Worcestershire Forum Against Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence said: “Many women find it extremely difficult to leave abusive relationships; there is so much support out there for them and their children and as we embark on the 16 Days of Action campaign, we urge them not to suffer in silence.”
