Drivers churning up green as road closed signs ignored near Studley

FED-UP residents have hit out at drivers flouting road closed signs in Middletown Lane between Studley and Sambourne.

The road was closed earlier this week at the Middletown junction following a gas leak.

Since then repair work has been underway, the hole taking up one side of the narrow lane.

Road closed signs have been put up and diversions put in place but that hasn’t stopped many commuters, lorry drivers and even the Royal Mail van from shifting the barriers to one side and driving round.

Reports, from three different sources, have told of drivers moving traffic cones, signs and barriers, driving over people’s drives, through the roadwork section and/or across the small grass ‘village green’ leaving grass in tatters with heavy ruts across it.

One resident said: : “The workmen have dug up half the road and when drivers see that they just go round the hole and up the grass – it’s creating a right mess.”

A second added: “They’re idiots. I was walking up there with my dogs and this white van tried to get round, was up on the grass and then the driver decided he couldn’t make it and headed back towards the Green Dragon.

“It’s made a right mess of the road.”

Another said: “Cars, lorries, agricultural vehicles and even the Royal Mail van have been seen ignoring and moving the closure signs and barriers, then driving through the roadworks.”

It is expected that the work should be completed by this weekend and the road re-opened.
