THE Duke of Kent was greeted by talented trainee engineers on Monday morning, November 25, when he paid a visit to Midland Group Training Services (MGTS).
The Duke, who is the Queen’s first cousin, was taken on a tour around the Centre of Excellence after listening to a presentation on MGTS’ history.
He was told about its wide-ranging apprenticeship opportunities and its proven track record for developing young talent.
Engineer apprentice Joanne James, aged 18, said: “It’s really exciting to have a member of the royal family visit us.
“I’m currently in my 11th week in a 42-week course and I’m really enjoying it.”
The Duke served in the British Army for more than 20 years, doing tours in Hong Kong, Northern Ireland and Cyprus.
MGTS CEO David Bridgens said: “We were very proud to have Prince Edward the Duke of Kent here.
“The world of engineering is not always seen as the most attractive industry to enter.
“And unfortunately it’s not particularly well-represented by black or female groups.
“We are trying to move away from the stigmas and make it more inclusive for everyone.”
