RISING Redditch star Stuart Woolfenden is to play his first headline gig this Saturday, February 1 at Dead Wax – formerly the Wagon and Horses – in Digbeth, Birmingham.

Stuart, who has blazed a trail across Redditch, is in his final year at BIMM – the Birmingham Institute of Music – and felt the time was right to step right out into the spotlight.

“I just felt the time was right to do my first headliner,” said the former Tudor Grange Academy student who’ll be taking to the stage complete with backing band.

“We’d original gone for December then pushed it back to February to give us a bit more time.”

It’s the first step in what is a massive year for the Church Hill star who also has a seven track EP in the pipeline, scheduled for release in May.

With two tracks produced by Redditch’s very own sound man Elliot Vaughan and five songs self-produced it has the potential to propel the man who gave up a Maths degree to study music even higher.

“It’s a bit of a mini album but I wanted to lay down a down a body of work, something that people could really get into,” said Stuart.

It also marks a slight change of sound for the guitar-toting singer-songwriter who has brought in a lush electro-pop feel courtesy of an 80s era Yamaha synthesizer to the disc.

“I’m trying to be a bit more strategic with songs and the plan is to release a couple of music videos from the EP with the first song coming out in March, then another in April and then May,” said Stuart, who has already pencilled in a number of gigs and festivals for this year.

Tickets for the Dead Wax gig are just £7 and with three support acts, it promises a great night of great music.

“I’m giving a big shout out to the people of Redditch to come along and support me – it would be great to see you,” he said.

Dead Wax is at 28 Adderley Street, Digbeth, Birmingham, B9 4ED.
