Families left outraged as local charity cancels childcare services

FAMILIES say they are furious after Redditch YPlay cancelled its before and after school care with less than one week’s notice due to staff shortages.

The charity offers out of school care for children aged three to 12 years old including breakfast, after school and holiday clubs.

The closure has left several families without wrap-around care for their children.

One mum, Claire Gardner said: “My own job can’t be done from home, I work at a helicopter flying school in Wellesbourne.

“It seems the only choice I have is to try and move my daughter to another school that has provision, if even possible, for her final term or I quit my job.

“We have no other options for childcare.

“We need someone to step in for the benefit of our children who have the uncertainty of what is happening to them after half term.”

Claire asked her daughter’s school, Moons Moat First School, if they could put childcare in place, however the school stated that as there are only four families that have asked for advice they won’t be providing anything onsite.

Dr Annette Daly chief executive at Redditch YPlay, which is based at Willow Trees Community Centre in Church Hill, said in an announcement: “We’ve had to consolidate our staffing into our nurseries and make the reluctant decision that we can no longer offer YPlay before/afterschool care.

“Our aim is to serve our communities and support families and young people – in body, mind and spirit.

“Please know that we have not made this decision lightly, we very much regret that we can’t maintain this service for our local families at the moment.”
