Fight on to save hall in Alcester

Redditch Editorial 24th Sep, 2017   0

CAMPAIGNERS in Alcester are rallying round to save a vital community asset from ‘neglect and dilapidation’.

Residents have pulled together to form ‘Greig Hall Action 2017’, with the aim of preventing the empty building from falling into ruin.

Meeting for the first time on Tuesday, September 19, around 30 people turned out to discuss the future of the Kinwarton Road venue.

Resident Sheilagh Goode said: “The hall has been closed for six years now and the neglect and dilapidation is obvious.

“If action is not taken soon, it will be beyond repair.

“We cannot stand by and allow this generous gift to the people of Alcester to fall into ruin. We must act now.”

The main building was built in 1958, with finances donated by Mr David Greig, a respected businessman who ran a chain of grocery stores.

His wife, Hannah Susan, had committed herself to working for and with the youth of Alcester and when she died her husband built the hall in her memory.

Financial difficulties forced the Greig Trustees to close the Hannah Susan Greig Memorial Hall in 2011, while keeping the leisure centre open.

The hall has faced an uncertain future ever since, with previous plans to build new homes turned down, leading to it being registered as a community asset.

Sheilagh added: “It was a good turnout for a first meeting and we know there’s a lot of interest out there.

“We just want to be kept informed of what is going on.”

Greig Hall Action 2017 are planning to meet with trustees and are in contact with Alcester Town Council and Stratford District Council.
