Filming of documentary of a Redditch boxing club set to continue

FILMING for a documentary which tells the story of Wallop Boxing Club and its lead coach and director, Carl Dickens, has been extended.

Freelance videographer Harry Johnson, from Feckenham, has been filming at the Redditch club over the past few months.

However, such is the success of Wallop’s fighters, both Harry and Carl, have agreed to extend the project by several months.

Harry started filming the club and its ongoings last summer after conversations with his dad Neil.

Neil used to sponsor Carl when the latter fought as a professional boxer.

And London-based videographer Harry believes an extension to the project will help tell a stronger story about Wallop and the club’s fighters.

Harry said: “Progress has been great. There’s been so much to film from compared to when we initially spoke to just tell the story of the gym.

“With me being down in London, Carl calls me with an update and I end up coming back and filling days with filming. Progress is really good.

“We decided to extend the project to justify the story a bit more because it didn’t feel like the story was over after the first couple of months.

“The main surprise for me is just how much is in there from the initial idea of showing how boxing can help people, mixed with the success of the gym.”

Harry has previously worked on productions for Channel 4 and has thoroughly enjoyed the process of documenting Wallop.

And he hopes the final cut of the documentary will cast a different light on the sport.

Harry added: “You hope whatever you film is authentic.

“It hasn’t been a difficult process, compared to other things I’ve worked on because everything I’m filming with Carl is good stuff.

“We want to keep the premise the same in terms of what boxing does for people so when it comes to the edit, it’s going to be very difficult leaving anything out.

“The premise that’s coming out of it is the good that boxing can offer to people on all kinds of levels.

“I don’t want the documentary to have a singular message.

“I hope it will show people a different side to what they might think boxing actually is.

“It will hopefully be a few stories within one story.”
