First sign of spring as snowdrops arrive in Alcester

STUNNING snowdrops have begun to carpet roads around Alcester.

The bright, white plants, which boast more than 2,500 varieties, are seen as the first signs of spring and an indication that the latest changing of the seasons is on its way.

The little bulbs, best seen in February, often represent hope or purity and are historically linked to Candlemas.

Victorians, however, considered them unlucky, associating them with death.
