First steps taken in regeneration of Winyates and Matchborough centres

WINYATES and Matchborough centres could see major regeneration and improvement works if plans go ahead to redevelop the areas.

Redditch Borough Council is currently investigating the potential for the regeneration of thecentres with plans to work with Worcestershire County Council, Homes England and North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWEDR) to bring the concepts to life.

Options include a mix of new housing, regeneration of the local shopping centres and improvements to landscaping to create a high quality new development to benefit local residents.

The report, which went before the authority’s executive committee on Tuesday night, January 8 was passed meaning that works can now take place to test the development options, inviting developers to come forward to work with the council and Homes England on the scheme.

Before any potential schemes are considered, residents, visitors and businesses will have the opportunity to give their views through a full consultation.

The council have also submitted a bid for funding from the Government’s One Public Estate programme which will help with the cost of reviewing the development options with a decision expected next month.

Council leader Councillor Matt Dormer said: “Should the schemes go ahead as planned, they will provide great opportunities for existing businesses, tenants and residents as well as drawing in new business and people wanting to relocate.

“This is the kind of investment we want and need for our town and could be another step towards unlocking Redditch.”
