THE flag over Redditch town hall has been lowered as a mark of respect following the tragic events in London on Saturday night.

Seven people were killed and at least 48 people injured during the terrorist attack on Saturday night where a white van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge before driving on to nearby Borough Market where three attackers emerged and carried out multiple stabbings in pubs and restaurants.

The attackers were armed with knives and wore what turned out to be fake suicide vests and armed police arrived and shot the attackers dead within eight minutes of being alerted.

The UK will observe a minute’s silence on Tuesday, June 6 at 11am in remembrance of those who lost their lives and all others affected by the attacks.

The new Mayor of Redditch, Councillor Jenny Wheeler, and Bill Hartnett will be writing to the mayor of London expressing their deepest sympathy on behalf of the town.

Police advice asks people to ‘be vigilant but not alarmed’ and Deputy Chief Constable Karen Manners said: “The tragic events in London our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“The threat level to the country remains at ‘severe’. This means that our policing response and advice to communities will remain the same as last week when the threat level returned to ‘severe’ after being heightened to ‘critical’ in the aftermath of the incident at Manchester Arena on May 22.

“There is no intelligence to suggest there is any specific threat to the communities in the Warwickshire or West Mercia policing areas.”
