Flippin great fun as Alcester has a brilliant Shrove Tuesday celebration

THE Pancake Day Races in Alcester were not dampened by the weather as hundreds of locals turned out to support and take part in the annual event, writes Rhys Goodfellow.

Despite the cold and wet conditions on Shrove Tuesday, there was flippin’ great fun for all as crowds lined the streets to watch the fun.

The event has been running for more than 50 years with local schools prominent in battling it out on the streets, frying pans in hand.

More than 200 people attended the event, from nursery children up to high school pupils and, for the first time, members of the church community took part in the races.

Vicars, baptists and other members of the church turned up to take part in the first ever vicars race, which proved a great success.

Although there were no winners in the vicars race, the groups were resplendent in their full vestments and all crossed the finish line at the same time to demonstrate great team spirit.

Ian Whitehead, Immediate Past High Bailiff, said: “The event itself has been running for more than 50 years now but it’s the first time we have had the vicars race.

“Prizes were given out to all the schoolchildren who came first, second and third.

“The weather wasn’t on our side but we had a great turnout as always.”

The races were sponsored by many companies, including Simply Fresh, Sanders & Sanders and Seco Tools, which helped advertise the races.
