Football crazy - United bid to get Redditch girls playing the beautiful game

Redditch Editorial 2nd Jan, 2020   0

A NEW initiative to get more girls interested in football has been launched by Redditch United.

The move comes in the wake of the success of England’s Lionesses at the last Women’s World Cup and is being driven locally by the Reds Foundation which aims to encourage greater participation in the beautiful game by both boys and girls.

“We started by focusing on the boys and we now have 30 to 40 coming down on a Monday night and being developed by FA approved coaches,” said Alan Williams from the Red Foundation.

“We now want to focus on girls and get them to leave the classroom behind, forget about the computer and come on down and give it a try.

“The initiative offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls aged five to 12 regardless of ability or experience – all are welcome.

“Research has shown that the majority of girls prefer to play in girls only football & the earlier a girl starts playing the more likely they are to have a long term relationship with the game.

“We see this initiative as an opportunity to get more girls into football and give them the chance to progress into one of our teams.

“We hope the initiative will inspire girls to engage with football, meet new friends, develop fundamental skills, learn new things and create the foundation for a lifelong love of football.”

The initiative is also seeing the Reds Foundation go into schools – initially the Vaynor School and Matchborough Infants to further encourage both boys and girls to have fun by having a go at the game.

The sessions will be girls only and will take place weekly at the Trico Stadium, Bromsgrove Road, Redditch B97 4RN on Friday evenings from 6pm to to 7pm on the club’s 3G pitch each week.

It starts on Friday, January 10 and is free for that month and £3 a session from February.
