TWO FORMER Reform UK councillors have launched a new political party, claiming to put Redditch residents first.
Borough and county councillor Ashley Monk, alongside county councillor David Taylor announced yesterday their new party, Worcestershire Independent Group.
Coun Monk was suspended from Reform UK on Monday, alleging it was because of his criticism of incoming new leader Coun Alan Amos.
Coun Amos was set to be sworn into his role today, replacing Coun Monk’s mum, Coun Jo Monk, who was also suspended this week.
But in a shock turn of events, Dan Boatright-Greene, leader of the Lib Dems, put forward Green and Independent alliance group leader councillor Matt Jenkins.
Conservative leader Adam Kent, seconded the nomination.
When the vote came for Coun Alan Amos, he failed to get a simple majority, and Coun Jenkins succeeded.
Coun Ashley Monk said the new party will put residents needs before party politics.
He said: “Politics is noisy right now – nationally and locally. But what matters most to residents is not Westminster drama or party infighting.
“What matters is the work being done on the doorstep, in our communities, and for the people we were elected to serve.
“That is exactly where our focus will remain.
“We will continue listening to residents, standing up for local communities, and holding councils accountable whenever standards fall short.”
