Fresh hope for Puffin Crossings to be installed in Redditch

Redditch Editorial 16th Jun, 2019   0

HOPES are high two Puffin Crossings will be installed to allow easier access from Winyates Green to Mappleborough Green Primary School.

The proposal is currently out for consultation and the crossings could be installed this year by Warwickshire County Council if all goes to plan.

The popular and highly-rated school receives 95 per cent of its pupils from Winyates Green, which means pupils crossing the busy A435 Birmingham Road and then the A4189 Henley Road or being driven there.

Headteacher Alex Finch said: “This is very much what we were hoping for and it will make a massive difference to us.

“We always want the children to walk and cycle and enjoy the health benefits but to do so means crossing those roads and that’s where the problem lies.”

Local County Councillor Clive Rickhards (Lib Dem) who has been pushing for the crossings at County Hall said: “The money has been made available through the safer routes to school programme and this development is very much welcome.”

Puffin Crossings, which can cost £100,000 to install, can sense when someone is waiting after the button is pushed and sense also sense when someone is slow in crossing, holding the lights on red for longer.

Consultation on the crossings closes on June 28.
