A Redditch engineering giant with global reach has been celebrating both its modern-day achievements and the lasting connections forged within its workforce.
Mettis Aerospace, based in Enfield, is one of the region’s most important and internationally significant companies.
Specialising in the design and manufacture of precision-forged and machined components, the firm supplies the aerospace, defence, and energy sectors worldwide. Its parts are used in commercial airliners, fighter jets, helicopters, and even space applications, making Mettis a key player in industries where safety, durability, and accuracy are paramount.
The company’s presence in Redditch is not just a matter of business; it represents a proud tradition of local craftsmanship and high-skilled employment. Generations of engineers and technicians have passed through its doors, many staying for their entire careers.
One such story is that of Michael Simpson, who first walked through the gates in 1962 as a fresh-faced apprentice on Mettis Aerospace’s renowned five-year rotation programme.
“It was the beginning of a journey that shaped not only my career but also my life,” Michael recalled.
He remained with the company until his retirement, building a career grounded in loyalty and teamwork. In fact, Michael only decided to leave when his best friend and colleague of many decades emigrated to New Zealand. “I couldn’t imagine working without him,” he explained.
This summer, 14 years after his retirement, Michael returned to Mettis for a special visit. Welcomed by CEO Martin Whittaker and Environmental, Health & Safety Manager David Mitchell, he toured the site to see first-hand the changes, from modernised facilities to cutting-edge production techniques, while also finding much that felt reassuringly familiar.
“It’s not every day that we welcome back a colleague whose connection to the company spans over 60 years,” said CEO Martin Whittaker. “Michael’s story reminds us of the lasting impact workplaces can have, and how relationships formed through shared purpose can last a lifetime. Thank you, Michael, for being part of the fabric of Mettis Aerospace history.”
For Michael, the highlight was not the machinery or the buildings, but the people. The spirit of craftsmanship, the sense of pride, and the bonds between colleagues remain the heartbeat of Mettis Aerospace.
As Redditch continues to look to the future, Mettis stands out not just as one of the town’s largest employers, but also as a world-class business flying the flag for British engineering excellence. It is a reminder that right here in Redditch, components are being made that help keep aircraft flying safely across the globe and at the heart of it all are stories like Michael’s, where work becomes something much more enduring.
For those interested in joining the next chapter of that story, Mettis Aerospace continues to recruit. Details can be found on the company’s website.
