THERE was all the fun of the fair in Alcester this week when the Court Leet Mop came to town.
It is nearly eight centuries since Alcester was first granted its Royal Charter to hold a Mop fair
The Royal Proclamation was read to a gathering of eager fair-goers outside the Royal Oak pub in High Street, before it was time to test out the rides.
Later there was the traditional auctioning off of bread, fish and meat near St Nicholas Church and the giving away of free ale to keep everyone in high spirits.
Historically, the fair was held to hire farm hands when people would parade before the landowners who were looking for extra workers.
