Fund raising football match to help Redditch lad George beat bowel cancer

A CHARITY match will be held at Redditch United’s Trico Stadium (The Valley) tomorrow, Saturday, to raise funds for a Redditch man diagnosed with bowel cancer.

George Hands was just 25-years-old when he was given the news that he had bowel cancer.

Originally it was thought George was suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome before he was later diagnosed with the disease, which kills more than 15,000 people a year in the UK.

This Saturday, January 27 at 6.30pm, two teams will come together to play a match in aid of the charity Bowel Cancer UK and their friend George.

#TeamGeorge, an outfit made up of George’s former under-16s team from Headless Cross, will be reuniting after 10 years to play SCC Redolence FC, a local Redditch Sunday league side.

Redditch Utd’s community manager, Ryan Kettle, was a teammate of George at Headless Cross and will be taking part in the fundraiser.

“Football is a sport that brings everyone together and a time like this is no exception,” he said.

“George was an excellent footballer, teammate and is a great friend. We feel this is a fitting way to raise money for a fantastic cause and to give George all the help and support he needs to fight cancer.

“Bringing the old team together shows how much George means to us, and we hope that people come and donate anything they can. We are confident that this will be a competitive game and will be a night to remember.”
