GET teed up for a great sport that’s really taking off in Redditch.
Disc golf, based at Arrow Valley Park, has seen its number of devotees surge in the past six months as people discover the fun and challenging sport that costs a fraction of a round of golf.
Played with plate-like discs that are spun through the air, the aim is to get round the course, landing the discs in baskets, with as few throws as possible.
“It’s a great way to get out in the fresh air and have fun,” said Matt Wright, one of the organisers of Arrow Valley Disc Golf.
“There’s also a big social aspect to it as well and we’ve seen our numbers really grow, to the extent that more than 100 players have taken part in our last ten events.”
The disc golf craze took off in America and has flown its way to the UK where teams have been set up across the country.
“Our numbers have grown 3 to 400 per cent this year and we’re in the process of setting up a community interest group to take care of the admin side of things,” said Matt.
Arrow Valley Park features a permanent nine basket course, although the team has the ability to extend it to 18.
Having a go couldn’t be easier as the lakeside visitor centre rents out discs for people to try.
And if you’re bitten by the bug a set of three discs, for driving, approach shots and putting, cost from as little as £20.
“Before people rush out and spend their money though we’d advise them to come down and try it out as the discs have different weights and flying characteristics,” said Matt.
Arrow Valley Disc Golfers play throughout the year but their final home competition is this Sunday at 9.30am in the park.
