A NEW Couch to 5k course is starting this April offering running novices in Redditch the chance to get into shape.
The popular running course, designed for absolute beginners, has seen many successes and will be starting a new session on Sunday, April 8 at 11am.
Anyone who wants to ditch the couch and start running can become able and confident to run five kilometres over the nine-week course, at Arrow Valley Countryside Park every Sunday from 11am. Sessions last approximately 45 minutes.
Led by qualified Run Leaders and supported by the NHS, the course includes a series of downloadable podcasts designed to structure each run with music and coaching to develop running technique, speed and stamina over time, as well as a companion smartphone app.
The next round also leads into this year’s Race for Life in the park on Sunday, June 11, the week after the course ends.
While C25K is open to anyone, any women interested in taking part in this year’s Race for Life might be interested in the C25K programme as part of a training regime.
“We’ve been supporting these groups for a few years now and they are very popular,” said Hayley Gwilliam, Health Intervention Officer for Redditch Borough Council.
“Many people have surprised themselves and found that couch to 5k was the kick start that helped them ease into the more active lifestyle they wanted.
“Not only that, but we’re pleased we could time this course to help out any ladies interested in running Race for Life.”
The course is £1 per session and is pay as you go.
Regular brisk exercise can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and stroke, boost mood and control weight.
