Get out and about on the canals on your doorstep

Redditch Editorial 29th Oct, 2017   0

RESIDENTS with an interest in the canals are being urged to find out more about the Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society which is always on the lookout for new members.

Among those who join the society are narrowboaters, boat crew, those interested in natural history and local history, photography, archaeology, walking, cycling or running along the waterways or those working to preserve the canals and the surrounding area.

The society holds its monthly meetings at Alvechurch Boat Centre, Scarfield Walk, Alvechurch, at 7.45pm on the first Tuesday of the month.

There are usually guest speakers and quiz and film nights are held.

A spokesperson for the Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society, said: “If you are in the least bit curious do come along, as non-members are always welcome.

“You do not need to be a boat owner as most of our members are not.

“The Weighbridge Pub is right next to the meeting room as well.”

The Society actively encourages volunteering in a variety of ways to suit all individuals such as conserving the Tardebigge Lime Kilns, litter picking, marshalling at festivals, tree and shrubbery planting and supporting the restoration of the Lapal Canal (Dudley No. 2) to name but a few.

“We also own our own narrowboat ‘Cecilia’ which is available for members to use along with local groups, charities, care homes and for people who do not normally have use of a narrowboat.

“We hope to see as many new faces as possible from all sections of the community in the meeting room which is compliant with disability access.”
