Giant Christmas tree adds to the magic of Redditch festive lights

CHRISTMAS came alive in Redditch town centre on Saturday when the crowds gathered for the big festive lights switch on.

Organised by Redditch Borough Council and supported by town centre businesses through Redditch Business Improvement District it featured a stunning giant Christmas tree presented by the BID.

“The tree measures 12 metres high with a base diameter of six metres and a key feature of a walk-through tunnel covered in lights,” said Ken Williams of Redditch BID.

“We think this may be the largest town centre tree in the county, and will serve to attract people to come and see, have a photo and share with friends and relative highlighting the change and the Christmas Tree Trail inside St Stephens Church.”

On the switch on day entertainment started early with a Christmas parade of acrobatic elves, festive stilt walkers and ballerinas.

It was then the turn of a range of community groups and singers to perform on stage before Shaun Paul Smith and his dance crew stepped out in style.

Headliners The Greatest Show Performance then took over before Father Christmas himself arrived to switch on the lights.

To stay in the festive spirit, the Christmas tree trail is a free-to-see spectacle of over 20 decorated Christmas trees inside St Stephen’s Church.

Decorated by local businesses, community groups and charities visitors are asked to nominate their favourite tree.

Redditch BID – known as Revitalise Redditch – is dedicated to attracting more visitors to the town and rewarding the loyal support from local communities.
