Go plastic free - mass unwrap at Sainsbury's in drive to tackle pollution

Redditch Editorial 15th Nov, 2019   0

A ‘MASS Unwrap’ is to be held in Redditch this Saturday, November 16 in a drive to encourage shoppers to leave unnecessary plastic packaging behind.

Organised as part of the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Communities’ campaign, volunteers will be at Sainsbury’s Redditch on the Abbey Trading Centre between 10.30am and 12.30pm to help shoppers unwrap their groceries and leave unnecessary plastic packaging with them.

Dr Nayab Patel lead volunteer for the event, said: “The majority of single-use of plastic finds its way to landfill or ends up in our oceans destroying marine life across the planet.

“We need to tackle this at source – a bag around a bunch of bananas or clingfilm around cucumber is not necessary.

“Sainsbury’s have shown great support in becoming involved in Redditch’s first mass unwrap to help the war against plastic.

“We will audit all the returned plastic packaging and return it back to Sainsbury’s.”

After paying for their groceries as normal at the till, shoppers will meet the volunteers at the entrance, who will help to remove the plastic packaging.

Shoppers are asked to bring alternative containers/packaging to take their shopping home.
