A REDDITCH goalkeeper is heading for the United States after winning a scholarship to further his sporting career.

Talented Liam Lothian, who’s currently working in the catering department at the Alexandra Hospital, has played at youth level for Redditch United and been on the books at Birmingham City.

The 19-year-old, a former pupil at Arrow Vale High School, has successfully completed a Btec course and gone on to get his Level 1 coaching badges in coaching and goalkeeping.

“We’re thrilled for him but we’ve also launched a Just Giving page to help with the expenses of getting him over there,” said his proud mum Ann Ballinger from Church Hill.

“We’re reaching out to local companies or individuals in the form of sponsorship or donations to cover things like his medical insurance and travelling costs.”

Liam’s course – at St Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota – offers him the chance to study and play football. It starts on August 17.

He was spotted while at Blues. He was approached by a recruitment agency and invited for a trial.

This was successful and he was offered a place at Duluth.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity,” said Ann.

“I’ve been with him since day one, on the touchline supporting him for all his games, taking him to matches, to training and so on.

“It would be wonderful for him to realise his dream.”
