TOP fryer George Ellinas is a chip off the old block after being named one of the top 10 ‘best young fish fryers’ in the Midlands.

George, the son of award winning Redditch chip shop owner Theo Ellinas, says he is ‘over the moon’ at the accolade.

George works at the Golden Carp in Matchborough, which has once again won its way through to contest the final of the Seafish Chip of the Year competition.

He will now progress to the next round in his quest to be crowned the UK’s ‘best young fisher’.

“I can’t even put it into words how happy I am,” he said.

“I’m so proud of what I have achieved but I feel like I can push myself even more to get to the final and be named the best in the UK.

“There’s still a lot of work I can do and that involves even more practice.”

Over the coming weeks candidates will receive a skills based assessment, which includes chipping potatoes, making batter, trying fish and undergoing a personal interview in front of a panel of judges.

The eventual winner of the Seafish Drywite Young Fish Fryer of the Year competition will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards in London on January 24, 2019.
