GOLDEN Carp Chippy in Redditch has been named as one of the top 10 best fish and chip takeaways in the UK.

It will be vying to win the ‘Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’ category at the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by public body Seafish.

There are a number of rigorous judging stages to be named the best fish and chip shop in the UK, including mystery shopper visits and full inspections of each business.

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive Officer at Seafish, said: “These ten finalists represent the best fish and chips on offer the UK today.

“They are consistently excelling across all areas and providing their customers with healthy, high quality fish and chips on every visit.

“Each of them is a credit to the industry and should be commended on the commitment they have shown to maintaining its fantastic reputation.

“We wish them the best of luck.”

The winner of the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award will be announced at the award’s 32nd anniversary awards ceremony in London on January 23, 2020.

Golden Carp owner Theo Ellinas said: “We’ve stuck to the same old recipe that’s brought us success in the past, but we’re also doing a few new things with staff training and bringing in some new lines.

“We’re adding click and collect which I think will appeal to the youngster generation and also introducing a vegetarian menu.

“This will include things like cheese bites and we’ll also be catering for those who want chips cooked in their separate vegetable oil which has had no meat in it at all, and we’re going to do that at both the Winyates Chippy and the Golden Carp.”

To deal with dwindling stocks of cod Theo is also keen to introduce people to the great taste of different fish.

“Everyone has heard of haddock and plaice but we’re also looking at sea bass and hake and maybe some other varieties and I’m thinking of doing mackerel, which is a beautiful fish, both a battered version and a grilled one.”
