Grand gesture for a doughnut gives massive boost to fundraiser

IT SEEMED like a good idea – selling doughnuts with all the proceeds going to help refugees fleeing the Russian onslaught in Ukraine.

However nothing quite prepared Piotr Galas of Redditch Craft Bakery for what was to follow.

“I opened my shop as usual at 9am, we were stocked up with doughnuts, but there were so many people, we’d sold out by 11am,” said Piotr.

But that’s not all.

“Earlier one elderly lady had come in and asked to buy a doughnut, one single doughnut.

“I gave her the doughnut and told her the price, and she gave me £1,000.

“£1,000! I said to her, no, you’ve given me way too much and she replied that she knew what war was like, she knew the suffering people were going through, and told me to add it to the fund.

“I was astonished, but at the time really busy.

“The next time she came in I said to her, ‘for what you have done, for the rest of your life, whatever you want to buy in here is yours for free’.”

It didn’t end there either, so great was the demand for doughnuts that Piotr kept selling them for the fund on the following days, until eventually bringing it to a halt after raising an incredible £4,700.

“I’d like to thank all my customers, thanks to them we have raised a good sum for the people of Ukraine.”
