Green hearted heroes fly the flag for Reddditch at Climate Coalition awards

BIG hearted local organisation Eco n Wise Redditch travelled to London last week after being nominated in the Climate Coalition’s Green Heart Hero Awards.

The awards are a prestigious event held at the Palace of Westminster and as it was a cross political party event it was attended by a number of peers and MPs.

“The awards celebrate those going above and beyond to protect the world we love from climate change, and it was a privilege for us to be nominated in the category of Inspirational Community Project,” said Eco n Wise’s Claire Davies.

Eco n Wise was set up in January 2018 with the aim of helping people make informed sustainable choices about how they live.

Since then it has helped created a community where people can seek and share ideas to create a more sustainable Redditch.

“Currently we are promoting environmentally conscious clothing choices and we chose to dress in second hand clothes for the occasion,” said Claire.

“Each choice of fabric has it’s own pros and cons, and the conclusions we have come to is to buy less, and to buy second hand as much as possible.”

Claire, who has been selected as the Green Party candidate for Redditch in the event of a General Election added: “We are also supporting the Redditch and Bromsgrove Green Party in their pursuit of asking the council to declare a climate emergency.

“This requires the council pledging to achieve a carbon neutral status by 2030, and pressuring central government to support them in this endeavour.

“We need radical systemic change if we are to have any hope of tackling this 21st Century challenge.”

At the awards Eco n Wise just missed out on the top spot which was won by Transition Town Wellington, a group which has created four community orchards, as well as herb beds and fruit bushes dotted around the town.

These are cared for by a team of volunteers and there is a dedicated ‘foraging map’ so people can access healthy, seasonal and local food.
